Wine Barrels

Wine Barrels

In order to ensure smooth tannins and produce a red wine that is characteristic of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, an intense work of cap-punching, ‘rack and return’ and gentle pumping over is carried out at the beginning of the vatting period. The wines are aged in a variety of wooden containers such as tuns and one-wine and two-wine barrels.

History

The Domaine des Sénéchaux lies in the heart of the mythical Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and dates back to the XIV century. It owes its name to the domaine’s key vineyards in the Bois Sénéchaux area.

The Cazes family, owners of Château Lynch-Bages in Pauillac, purchased the Domaine des Sénéchaux in 2006.

With this new injection of energy, the future looks very bright. Jean-Charles Cazes, head manager of the family vineyards, has a real commitment to the Domaine and relies on the continuity provided by winemaker Bernard Tranchecoste, who has been with the company since 1998... and the old grenache vines that have been there significantly longer.

The estate produces an intense and generous red wine and an elegant and floral white wine, that reflect the unique character of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.

Castro Novo

It is highly likely that, in the Roman era, the vineyards already formed part of the Castro Novo territory, the former name for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. When the papacy relocated to Avignon in the XIV century, the prestigious title ‘’Vins du Pape’’ was exported to Europe and the United States.

The traditional blend of grape varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, composed mainly of Grenache, was established in the XVIII century by reputed winemakers including Joseph Ducos.

In order to accentuate the unique character of their wines, the region’s winemakers founded the first wine union in 1984. This formed the basis for AOC (Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée) and the strict regulations that are in place today.

Vineyard

Situated in the finest part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Domaine des Sénéchaux vineyards reveal the finesse and quality of their highly reputed appellation.

With a total of 27 hectares of surface under vine, the Sénéchaux vineyards lie on the reputed ‘’plateau’’ of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. It is composed of 3 main homogeneous cultural blocks in Sénéchaux, Revès and Grand Pierre.

The soils of the outstanding Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir are rich in gravel and rolled pebbles from Alpine diluvium. The distinctive Châteauneuf-du-Pape grape variety ratio is composed mainly of Grenache complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre.

Practises & Equipment

Thanks to the professionalism of Technical Director Bernard Tranchecoste and his team, traditional winemaking methods are used at the Domaine des Sénéchaux, including rigorous pruning, frequent plowing, ‘’green harvesting’’ on young vines, meticulous sorting of the harvest, de-stemming, long vatting periods, ageing in tuns and bottling at the Domaine for all of the wines produced.

Such skills and expertise allow the terroir to impart its full complexity and finesse to its red and white wines.

The technical facilities and storage areas are situated at the company’s headquarters in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They are modern, fully equipped and allow for the highest quality methods of production.
