Vineyard & About the Wine

Our 50 hectares of prized vineyards are amongst the oldest geological sites in Burgenland and are located over 8km along the Leithaberg Hills on the NW shore of Lake Neusiedl.

Wine has been made and grown in our region since the Roman times but the foundation for today’s viticulture was laid by the Cistercian monks from the Heiligenkreuz Monastery. In 1203 King Emmerich donated a tract of land, our famous Kirchberg, and the industrious monks soon realised its potential for wine growing.

Grüner Veltliner (grooner velt-lee-ner) is Austria’s national grape. Famous for its crispness and trademark peppery nose, it has won the hearts of sommeliers across the world for its versatility. It meets the challenges of earthy fresh asparagus and artichokes without making them taste vegetal. It matches perfectly with oysters, seafood, salads, sushi, Asian foods. It is a wine that whispers and can dance to many tunes. Elegant and never dull.

A good wine will find its own balance. It takes time and it requires sensitivity using traditional wine making methods with modern improvements.

About Höpler

Our location on the NW shore of Lake Neusiedl, in Burgenland enables us to produce an extensive range of wines that provide the quality demanded by Michelin-starred customers and appreciating wine consumers worldwide.  We export 75% of our wines and are one of the leading exporters of premium Austrian wine.

We make wines that can be discovered and experienced by everyone. They have a distinct minerality, character and identity and we are honoured to make a product that is at the heart of bringing people together.

Have fun and enjoy our wines!

Our history

The Höpler family has been making wine since the 1860’s and it was Jost Höpler in the 1980’s who founded the business as we know it today.

By 2004, the original winery in Winden am See was proving too small so we moved to our current site in the neighbouring village of Breitenbrunn. Winden now houses höplers weinräume.

Today Chrisof Höpler is the owner and wine maker. He took over from his father Jost in 2007 and continues the family tradition – sensitively farming our 50 hectares of vines.  His stewardship ensures a balance combining up to date viticultural practices with proven methods of the past.

Our winery

The Höpler winery is a 2,500m² modern facility equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and powered by solar energy.

Our winery is light and airy providing a great working environment for our team.  These are prerequisites for the consistent production of our high-quality wines.

Höpler is certified as a sustainable producer, our winery is IFS certified and like all Austrian producers we are regulated by Austrian wine law, widely acknowledged to be one the most rigorous in the world.

Wine making

The majority of our wines are fermented and stored in stainless steel tanks and we use French oak barrels to mature the balance, mainly our red wines. Our wines are vegan. We do not use any animal-based products.

We keep things simple. We allow our wines to mature in harmony, develop strong characters, and find their own identity. Their origins in our Höpler vineyards always remain tangible and lend a clear signature to our wines. We allow them the freedom to find their own balance and, in return, they thank us with their highest quality.
